頃接旅居美國的孫幼雲老師電郵﹐痛悉敬愛的陳永齡教授(原中央民族學院歷史系﹑民族學系)已於2011年3月13日(當地時間)駕鶴西遊﹐不勝哀悼。永齡教授一生獻身教學﹑厚待學子﹐可用“道德文章”概括。願他在天之靈永生﹐並願其親友節哀順變﹗茲錄其悼詞﹑遺像﹐及三個月前(12/2010)寄來的闔家照於下﹐以誌永遠懷念之情[晚 佳榮 泣拜於2011年3月16日香港]

Yongling Chen, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at his daughter Zengyi Chen and husband Zhong Liu’s home in South Burlington, VT.  Yongling Chen was a retired professor of ethnology from Central University of Nationalities, Beijing, China before moving to the United States of America. He was born in Beijing, China in 1918 and graduated from Yenching University in 1941.  After graduating, he taught at Xinjiang Institute in Xinjiang from 1942-1945.   In 1945 he went to Yenching Graduate School, which had been relocated to Chengdu, Sichuan.  After World War II, Yenching University moved its campus back to Beijing in 1946 and that enabled Yongling Chen to return home and be reunited with his fiancée Youyun Sun.  Although the war had separated Yongling Chen and Youyun Sun for more than five years with minimum mail correspondence, their love for each other never wavered.  They married in Beijing in 1947.  Yongling Chen then taught at Yenching University during 1948-1952, followed by a teaching and research career at Central University of Nationalities in Beijing from 1952 until his retirement in 1990. He had spent decades of his life time staying at various remote villages in Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, etc. to conduct field research on the cultures of different ethnic groups. His field research also included a North American Indian reservation in Canada. After retirement, Yongling Chen and wife Youyun Sun moved to the U.S. in 2000 and have been living with their eldest daughter Zengyi Chen and husband Zhong Liu in South Burlington, VT.

Yongling Chen was a genuinely loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with deep compassion and empathy.  He was an extraordinary human being who touched many people with whom he came into contact.   In his academic career, he was not only highly esteemed for his expertise, but his kind heart and humble spirit also won him immense respect from his colleagues and students.

Yongling Chen is survived by his wife, Youyun Sun, his three daughters, Zengyi Chen and husband Zhong Liu of South Burlington, VT, Zengyin Chen of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Zenghong Chen and husband Weiping Liu of Hanover, NH, and his son, Zenglo Chen and wife Elena Saucedo of Morrisville, NC; his brother Hsing-ling Chen and wife Tang Chiao-chung Chen; his six grandchildren, Dan and wife Viktorjia Liu, Joseph Zhong, Jessica Liu, Dana Liu, Evan Liu, and Melissa Chen; and his two great-grand-children, Maya Liu and Olivia Liu.

Yongling Chen made it in his will that he did not want a funeral service or visitation for himself.  He wanted to donate his body to medical research on human diseases before being cremated.  Following his will, his body is being donated to the University of Vermont Medical School.

Yongling Chen is now at the most peaceful home of God. As his family members, his love will continue to warm our hearts and will be in our memories forever.

The family is very grateful for the support and care provided by the Vermont Nurse Association Hospice Program and Vermont PACE program.
